KINGFISHER
Hole-nesting birds spend much time bathing and preening. The nest is in a burrow excavated by both birds of the pair in a low vertical riverbank, or sometimes a quarry or other cutting. The straight, gently inclining burrow and ends in an enlarged chamber.
The Common Kingfisher lays five to seven white eggs, One or two eggs in most clutches fail to hatch because the parent cannot cover them. Both sexes incubate by day, but only the female at night. The eggs hatch in 19–20 days, and the young are in the nest for a further 24–25 days, often more. Once large enough, young birds will come to the burrow entrance to be fed. White Tailed or Sea Eagle
The white-tailed eagle is the largest Irish bird of prey. It has brown body plumage with a conspicuously pale head and neck which can be almost white in older birds, and the tail feathers of adults are white. In flight it has massive long, broad wings with 'fingered' ends. Its head protrudes and it has a short, wedge-shaped tail. It went extinct in Ireland during the late 19th century, due to illegal killing, and the present population has been recently reintroduced.
